Praia Azul

Praia Azul is a sandy beach on the Atlantic coast north of Porto with gently sloping sections and consistent waves throughout the year. The cove offers plenty of space for different water activities and sits close enough to the city for easy visits.

Matosinhos developed rapidly as a coastal town during the 20th century, transforming this natural beach into a recreational hub for the greater Porto area. The shoreline gradually gained facilities and pathways to welcome growing numbers of visitors.

Fishermen still work along the northern section, selling their daily catch at a nearby market that locals visit regularly. This area shows how deeply the sea is woven into the daily life of the community.

Access is straightforward from Avenida Manuel Barros, which connects the beach directly to the city. Lifeguards are present during summer months, though it is wise to check conditions and take normal water safety precautions.

A rocky islet roughly 150 meters offshore creates distinct wave patterns that draw surfers to the southern end. On blustery days you can watch how this formation shapes the waves and creates varying conditions along the beach.
