Playa de El Palmar
Playa de El Palmar is a wide sand beach on the Atlantic coast, close to Vejer de la Frontera in the province of Cádiz. It runs in a straight line with no rocks or built structures, with fine light-colored sand and open water access.
When tourism began spreading along the Cádiz coast in the 1960s, this stretch was largely passed over by developers. The surrounding land kept its natural state while other nearby shores were heavily built up.
El Palmar has a strong surf culture, and the few cafés and beach shacks along the shore serve freshly caught fish cooked in the Andalusian way. The connection between the sea and the table feels direct and unpretentious here.
The beach is easy to reach on foot from the small village of El Palmar, where parking is available nearby. During the main season, lifeguards are on duty, but waves can be stronger than expected on windy days.
The wind that blows here almost year-round comes funneled down from the nearby Cabo de Trafalgar, making El Palmar one of the most consistent spots for windsurfing and kitesurfing in southern Spain. Several surf schools operate directly on the sand and have become a regular part of the scene.
