Jug Handle Beach

The sandy shoreline stretches along the Pacific Ocean, featuring coastal bluffs and natural rock formations shaped by centuries of wave action.

The beach forms part of the Jug Handle State Natural Reserve, established to protect five distinct marine terraces that span 500,000 years of geological evolution.

The reserve incorporates traditional lands where Indigenous communities gathered marine resources and conducted ceremonies for generations before European settlement.

Visitors can access the beach daily from 5:00 AM to 10:00 PM through designated trails from the parking area near Highway 1.

The ecological staircase near the beach contains terraces with some of Earth's oldest soils, supporting rare pygmy forests adapted to extreme acidic conditions.
