Playa Ocotal

Playa Ocotal is a black sand beach along the Guanacaste coast with rocky outcrops on both ends creating natural boundaries. The shoreline features a gently sloping sandy bottom near the water's edge with rock formations throughout that create protected swimming areas.

This stretch of coast remained largely undeveloped until the 1990s when residential and tourism infrastructure began appearing on the surrounding hills. The construction boom transformed the area from a quiet natural setting into a established coastal community.

Local families regularly visit this beach to spend time together and explore the natural features like tide pools. The setting supports everyday social gatherings where people enjoy the coastal environment.

The water stays calm year-round, making it suitable for swimming, snorkeling, and paddleboarding at any season. Low tide reveals natural pools and sheltered areas that are easy to access and ideal for exploring without strong currents.

The beach holds Blue Flag certification recognizing its environmental standards and water quality. This award is given only to beaches that meet strict criteria for cleanliness and natural conditions.
