Playa Danta, Black sand beach in Tempate, Costa Rica
Playa Danta is a beach with dark volcanic sand along the Guanacaste coast, sitting within Catalinas Bay. The waters display the turquoise hue typical of the Pacific Ocean in this region.
Development began in 2006 when the nearby Las Catalinas town was planned for this coastal area. Initial residential and commercial structures opened in 2011 as part of this new seaside project.
The nearby Las Catalinas town shapes the area with cobblestone streets and traditional architecture inspired by Mediterranean design. This visual character creates a distinct setting that stands apart from typical Costa Rican beach communities.
Visitors can rent paddleboards, kayaks, and bicycles on site and enjoy beachfront dining at the Limonada restaurant. These facilities are located directly along the sand, making activity access and food options convenient.
A hiking trail links this beach to the smaller Playa Dantita and offers views over the tropical dry forest and Pacific coastline. This connection allows visitors to explore two beaches during one walk while experiencing woodland landscapes.
