Livshjulet, Bronze sculpture in Vigeland Park, Ullern, Norway.
Livshjulet is a bronze sculpture depicting people of various ages in a ring formation, holding each other and connected together. The work stands at the highest point of Vigeland Park and is clearly visible from that location.
Artist Gustav Vigeland created the original plaster model in the early 1930s as part of his overall vision for the park. The bronze cast was made later and took its current form in the middle of the 20th century.
The figures show different ages and human bonds that become visible in the circular form. You can observe the details of bodies and gestures that show how closely people are connected to one another.
Visitors should explore the park during daylight hours to see the details of the figures and the surrounding landscape. Access is available year-round, but the best time for photographs is in clear weather.
The rotating arrangement of the figures gives the composition a sense of movement, as if it were slowly turning. This continuous motion in bronze captures the flowing transition from one stage of life to another.
