Le Magasin Aux Vivres, Military warehouse in Metz, France
Le Magasin Aux Vivres is a former military warehouse in Metz that sits near the Moselle River and features stone walls with large arched windows. The building displays a regular grid of openings along its lengthy facade, reflecting practical design for storage and supply purposes.
The building was constructed between 1552 and 1560 by architect Rocco Guerrini as part of the citadel complex during French control of Metz. It survived the demolition of surrounding fortification structures when technological advances rendered the fortress defensive system obsolete.
The building represents Renaissance architectural principles through its proportions, symmetry, and combination of classical and Gothic design elements.
The former warehouse underwent renovation around 2000 and now operates as Hotel La Citadelle Metz with guest rooms and suites. Visitors can access the interior spaces to see how the original storage structure has been adapted for contemporary hospitality use.
This warehouse was among the few original citadel buildings that escaped demolition when the fortress lost its military purpose. Its preservation provides a rare surviving example of Renaissance military architecture and storage design.
