Hanatekuua, Remote beach in Hiva Oa, French Polynesia

Hanatekuua is a beach along the northern shore of Hiva Oa featuring white sand that runs beneath palm trees and volcanic rock outcrops. The shoreline is shaped by natural rocky ridges that divide the water into small coves at low tide.

The beach has been a landing point for boats and fishers since early Polynesian settlement times. Its sheltered position made it a preferred location for trade activities and inter-island contact.

The beach serves as a gathering place where residents go about their daily activities, weaving daily routines into the fabric of the location. It reflects a way of life deeply connected to the ocean.

The site can be reached by a hiking trail of about two hours, so wear sturdy shoes and bring plenty of water. The path is not always easy to follow, so it is wise to start early and pay attention to tide times.

At low tide, small lagoons form between the rocks with calm water where you can observe tiny sea creatures. These temporary pools exist for only a few hours and offer a glimpse into local marine life.
