Tatakoto, Maritime boundary near Tatakoto, French Polynesia, France
Tatakoto is a maritime boundary around an atoll in French Polynesia, located approximately 1,180 kilometers east of Tahiti. The atoll stretches about 14 kilometers in length and contains roughly 65 islets separated by channels within the reef system.
France established its maritime jurisdiction over Tatakoto waters following colonization of the atoll in the early 20th century. This boundary delimitation followed international conventions for territorial waters and exclusive economic zones.
The maritime boundary reflects traditional fishing practices of Polynesian communities in the Tuamotu group, who have worked these waters for generations.
Visitors can only reach the atoll by boat, as it lies far in the open ocean. Local guides or boat operators are necessary to navigate safely and understand the reefs and channels between the islands.
The atoll is a remote location where the lagoon and ocean connect through narrow, complex reef systems. This natural structure makes it a valuable habitat for marine life and a fascinating destination for divers and snorkelers.
