Morane, Maritime boundary in Morane Atoll, Gambier Islands, French Polynesia.
Morane is an atoll in the Gambier Islands with a lagoon enclosed by coral reef formations. The landmass takes an elongated shape, creating a protected body of seawater that remains largely undeveloped.
The atoll was first documented in 1828 by Captain Samuel Grimwood aboard the Discoverer and initially named after him. The location later became known as Morane and remained within French Pacific administration.
The atoll forms part of the Gambier Islands commune, representing French maritime sovereignty in the southeastern region of French Polynesia.
The location has no permanent settlements or facilities for visitors, making it accessible only by private boat or organized expedition. Visiting requires knowledge of local waters and tidal conditions.
The atoll serves as a refuge for rare bird species, including around 50 Polynesian ground-doves and approximately 200 Tuamotu sandpipers. These bird populations have made this location an important sanctuary for their species.
