Dutch explorer Jacob Roggeveen first documented Tikei in 1722, naming it Carlshoff during his Pacific expedition before Russian mariner Otto von Kotzebue renamed it Romanzov.
The former inhabitants of Tikei maintained their primary settlement in Tereporepo village, following traditional Polynesian customs and maritime practices.
