Museo Cuevas del Sacromonte, Cave museum in Sacromonte, Spain
The Museo Cuevas del Sacromonte is a cave museum in the Sacromonte neighborhood of Granada, Spain. It preserves eleven inhabited caves that display everyday household items, handcrafted tools, and objects that former residents once used in their daily lives.
The caves of Sacromonte began as dwellings in the 16th century when Muslim and Romani communities settled into the hillsides of Granada. Over time, this location grew into a thriving neighborhood with its own social fabric and way of living.
The exhibits of guitars, clothing, and dance items reflect how flamenco became woven into daily family life in this hillside community. These objects show how the art form passed naturally from one generation to the next among the cave dwellers.
The best way to experience the museum is to move slowly through each cave and spend time observing the displayed objects in their original setting. The passages are narrow and the ceilings low, so wearing comfortable shoes and being aware of head height will make the visit more pleasant.
From several viewpoints in the caves, you can see directly across the valley to the Alhambra palace, connecting two important places in Granada's story in a single view. This perspective shows how close yet separate these two worlds were for those living in the hillside.
