The museum houses approximately 150,000 specimens distributed across eleven collections that include fossils, archaeological remains, biological samples, and anthropological objects from the region and beyond.
The institution traces its origins to 1858 when Governor Juan Cornelio Moyano founded the Museum of Natural History, which was destroyed by an earthquake in 1861 and formally reestablished in 1911.
The museum preserves indigenous archaeological remains and cultural artifacts that illustrate the ancestral practices, social organization, and traditions of communities that inhabited Mendoza before colonial times.

The building was designed in the 1930s by architects Manuel and Arturo Civit and was declared a National Historic Monument in 2017, recognizing its architectural and cultural significance.
