Plaza Pedro del Castillo, Historic square and national heritage site in central Mendoza, Argentina.
The square features multiple layers of colonial architecture, indigenous trees from Argentina, Spain, and Brazil, and a central fountain providing water to residents.
Founded in 1561 by Pedro del Castillo, this square served as the administrative center of Mendoza until the devastating earthquake of 1861 destroyed the area.
Four major religious buildings surrounded the square, including the Matrix Church and San Francisco Church, reflecting Spanish colonial architectural traditions.
The square connects to neighboring streets Fray Luis Beltrán, Juan Bautista Alberdi, Videla Castillo, and Ituzaingó, making it accessible from all directions.
Between 1814 and 1817, General San Martín prepared his Army of the Andes in this location for the liberation campaign across South America.
