Plaza Pedro del Castillo, Historic square and national heritage site in central Mendoza, Argentina.

Plaza Pedro del Castillo is a historic square in central Mendoza that shows remains of colonial architecture and features a central fountain. Trees from Argentina, Spain, and Brazil grow throughout the space, and surrounding streets connect it from every direction.

Founded in 1561, this square served as the administrative center of Mendoza until a devastating earthquake in 1861 destroyed the area. The disaster fundamentally changed the city and left lasting marks on its urban structure.

The square was surrounded by four major churches that shaped Spanish colonial life in the city. These buildings served as gathering points for residents and reflected the religious focus of the community.

The square is easily explored on foot since surrounding streets connect it from every direction. Its central location makes it simple to visit the different corners and historical structures at your own pace.

Between 1814 and 1817, General San Martín prepared his Army of the Andes here for the liberation campaign. This military presence influenced South American history and made this location a starting point for major regional changes.
