Miradouro de São Leonardo de Galafura, Scenic viewpoint in Galafura e Covelinhas, Portugal.
Miradouro de São Leonardo de Galafura is a scenic viewpoint set on high ground above the Douro River valley, in the parish of Galafura e Covelinhas, in northern Portugal. The site has a paved terrace with stone benches, a restaurant serving regional food, and a large parking area.
The hill is said to take its name from a Roman commander called Galafre, who once oversaw a fort on this elevated ground. Over time, the site became associated with the veneration of Saint Leonard, which gave the viewpoint the name it carries today.
Stone panels engraved with passages from Portuguese writer Miguel Torga are set into the ground and walls around the terrace, since he wrote about this very spot in his literary work. Walking around the viewpoint, visitors can read his words while looking out over the same landscape he described.
The viewpoint is reached by a paved mountain road and has a large parking area right at the entrance, which makes it easy to visit by car. The terrace and restaurant are open to all visitors, and arriving in the morning or late afternoon gives the best light over the valley.
From the terrace, visitors can see the point where the Douro valley meets the valley of the Rio Ceira, forming a visible fork in the landscape that reveals two different geological layers side by side. This convergence is rare to observe so clearly from a single spot.
