Aeroseum, Underground aviation museum in Hisingen, Sweden
The Aeroseum is an aviation museum built underground in Gothenburg's northern district, located within tunnels and chambers carved into the bedrock beneath the city. The exhibition spans two levels of underground passages and displays aircraft, helicopters, and technical equipment within these subterranean halls.
The complex was built during the Cold War as a secret military installation designed to shelter Swedish aircraft and defense equipment. After the Cold War ended, the former military site was transformed into a public museum open to visitors.
The collection displays Swedish aircraft and helicopters from different eras, showing how aviation technology developed in the country. Visitors walk past real machines and equipment that remain displayed within the underground passages.
The underground spaces maintain a constant temperature year-round, making visits comfortable regardless of the season or weather outside. Good walking shoes are advisable since you will navigate through narrow tunnels and uneven stone floors throughout your visit.
The tunnels were originally excavated at a massive scale and use the natural properties of the rock formation for temperature regulation and structural stability. This generous spatial dimension allows the collection to be displayed across sprawling underground corridors that few visitors expect to find beneath a city.
