Artemio Franchi Stadium, Football stadium in Campo di Marte, Florence, Italy
Artemio Franchi Stadium is a football ground in the Campo di Marte district of Florence, recognizable by its tall Marathon Tower and curved concrete ramps on the outside. Inside, the stands are divided into separate sections, with the upper tier wrapping nearly all the way around the pitch.
Pier Luigi Nervi designed the ground, which opened in 1931 under the name Stadio Giovanni Berta, and it hosted matches during the 1934 FIFA World Cup. The stadium was renamed in 1991 after Artemio Franchi, a former president of the Italian Football Federation.
The Curva Fiesole end is where the most devoted Fiorentina supporters stand and sing together throughout a match. Attending a game here gives a clear sense of how deeply football is woven into everyday life in Florence.
The ground sits in the Campo di Marte district and is within easy walking distance of Firenze Campo di Marte train station. On match days, the area fills up quickly, so arriving early makes the whole visit more comfortable.
The stadium is listed as a protected architectural monument, which means major renovations are tightly restricted to preserve Nervi's original structure. This protection has made it one of the few sports grounds from the 1930s in Europe that still looks much as it did when it first opened.
