Grove Arcade, Historic commercial building in downtown Asheville, United States.
The Grove Arcade is a brick building from 1928 with terra cotta cladding, ornamental metalwork, and four corner entrances. Its interior was designed as a modern shopping center with individual shops and restaurants arranged along covered corridors.
The building was constructed in 1928 as one of the country's first shopping centers with covered corridor design. During World War II, it was used by the military before eventually returning to commercial purposes.
The winged lions at each corner draw from Italian tradition and symbolize protection and prosperity. Today they serve as a recognizable landmark that catches visitors' eyes upon arrival.
The building is easily walkable and centrally located downtown near other shops and attractions. The entrances are clearly marked, and the paths through the arcades are level and straightforward to navigate.
The exterior ramps were designed by architect Charles Parker following the style of the renowned Rampe Douce at nearby Biltmore Estate. They were intended to provide access to a planned roof garden that was never completed.
