Kanuni Sultan Suleyman 1 Turbesi
Kanuni Sultan Suleyman 1 Turbesi is a mausoleum inside the Suleymaniye Mosque, designed by the famous architect Mimar Sinan. The structure features cut marble with tile cladding, an octagonal plan, a rounded dome, and Quranic verses inscribed on its surfaces.
The mausoleum was built in 1566, the year Sultan Suleyman died during the siege of Sigetvar in Hungary. His internal organs were buried at the site of his death, but his body was transported to Istanbul and interred in this tomb.
The name comes from the Quran and reflects the sultan's strength and character. The simple yet dignified design of the mausoleum shows how people honored his memory and demonstrated respect for his legacy.
The mausoleum is located within the Suleymaniye complex, easily accessible by tram from Laleli-Üniversite station or by bus routes in the area. Visitors should enter with care and respect as it is a sacred space, and it can become crowded during visiting hours.
The mausoleum contains a stone called Hacer-ül Esved, believed to be from the Black Stone of the Kaaba. This sacred stone is a rare and meaningful element that surprises many visitors who learn of its presence.
