Şepsefa Hatun Mosque

Şepsefa Hatun Mosque, Ottoman mosque in Fatih, Turkey.

The Şepsefa Hatun Mosque is a place of worship in the Fatih district with a large central dome and four smaller domes that make the interior feel bright and spacious. The walls display features of Ottoman and Baroque architecture with carefully worked details throughout.

The mosque was founded in the middle of the 15th century and experienced major changes throughout its life, including significant damage in the 18th century. After an earthquake, it was completely rebuilt with reinforced structural elements.

The mosque was commissioned by a wealthy sultanate woman who expressed her piety through the choice of fine materials and thoughtful proportions. You can observe how a woman of influence shaped a space that reflected her religious devotion.

Visitors should know the building closes during prayer times, with separate entrances for men and women. It is wise to check prayer schedules and wear appropriate clothing if you wish to enter the prayer hall.

The adjacent cemetery holds graves of several influential figures from Istanbul's past. A short walk away, a large street market comes to life every Wednesday in the surrounding area.
