Verkhovyna, Mountain settlement in Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast, Ukraine.
Verkhovyna is an urban-type settlement in Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast, Ukraine, set in a forested Carpathian valley through which the Chorny Cheremosh River runs. Buildings line both sides of the river, with wooded slopes rising on all sides to frame the town.
The settlement was first recorded in 1424 under the name Zhabie, a name it kept through centuries of Austrian and Polish rule. It was renamed Verkhovyna in 1962, marking a shift in how the region defined itself after World War II.
The Museum of Hutsul Musical Instruments in Verkhovyna displays handmade instruments played in the Carpathian highlands, including trembitas, long wooden horns that carry sound across wide valleys. Walking through the collection gives a clear sense of how music has shaped daily life and gatherings in these mountain communities.
Minibus services connect the settlement to Ivano-Frankivsk, though travel times can vary depending on road conditions in the mountains. In winter, some access roads may be affected by snow, so it is worth checking conditions before setting out.
The old name Zhabie means 'frog' in Ukrainian, a reference to the marshy ground that once covered parts of the valley floor before the area was developed. The current name Verkhovyna comes from the word for 'highland' and reflects the terrain that defines the whole region.
