Balos beach trail

Balos beach trail is a coastal hiking route near Kissamos that descends about 2.7 kilometers from the parking area through limestone formations toward a white sand beach and turquoise lagoon. The path cuts across open terrain with rocky outcrops and offers changing views of the coast with each turn.

The trail faces Gramvousa Island, which served as a strategic stronghold for Mediterranean pirates and naval forces during the 16th century. This historical importance of the island has marked the region and remains visible from the route.

The trail passes through grazing lands where goats roam freely across rocky hillsides, a practice that has shaped the landscape for generations. This traditional use remains visible today and gives the path a natural, lived-in character.

The route is demanding in warm weather, so bring plenty of water and sun protection while wearing sturdy shoes. There are no facilities between the parking area and beach, so it helps to come prepared from the start.

In some parts of the beach, the sand glimmers with a pink tint, created by crushed shells and red microorganisms mixing with white limestone particles. This coloring develops naturally over time.
