Augustiner-Keller, Beer garden and recreation area in Maxvorstadt, Germany

Augustiner-Keller is a beer garden and recreation area in the Maxvorstadt district of Munich. Long rows of wooden tables sit beneath spreading chestnut trees, offering space for several thousand guests to sit and eat at the same time.

The site began in 1812 as a storage cellar for a brewery and passed to Georg Knorr in 1842, before taking its current name in 1880. Since then, the grounds have been used continuously as a serving location for Augustiner beer.

During warm months, many locals bring their own food to the tables, following an old tradition allowed in traditional beer gardens across Bavaria. Servers pour the beer from wooden barrels and carry it in heavy stone mugs, as they have done for generations.

The entrance sits on Arnulfstraße 52 in Munich, a short walk from Hackerbrücke station. Opening hours run daily from 11:30 until midnight, and arriving early on warm days makes finding a table easier.

A horse chestnut tree over 200 years old stands in the middle of the garden and has witnessed the development of Munich from the 19th century to today. This tree also once served as natural cooling for the beer barrels stored beneath it.
