Nemunas Delta
The Nemunas Delta is a river mouth in western Lithuania where the river spreads into wide channels flowing into the Curonian Lagoon. The area consists of extensive wetlands with dense reed beds, branching waterways, and low-lying islands.
The delta formed over thousands of years through sediment deposited by the river, creating a natural boundary between freshwater and salt water. During the 1900s, drainage projects were carried out that permanently altered the landscape.
The Nemunas Delta is where river life and conservation efforts shape the landscape together. Local communities have adapted to the water's natural rhythms and continue traditional fishing practices among the wetlands.
The best way to explore the delta is by boat or on marked walking trails that provide access to reed areas. The water is shallow and slow-moving, making it manageable for visitors of different abilities, especially during warmer months.
The delta serves as a major stopover for migratory birds in the region, offering exceptional viewing opportunities during spring and fall. Birdwatchers can spot rare species passing through the area during migration seasons.
