Lake of Montpezat, Artificial lake in Montagnac-Montpezat, France
Lake of Montpezat is an artificial reservoir in Provence with a distinctive star-shaped form, nestled between wooded hills. The body of water features sandy beaches along the right bank and connects to numerous walking and fishing areas throughout the region.
The lake took shape in the early 1970s as part of a hydroelectric project designed to generate power and supply water for irrigation of surrounding farmland. Its creation transformed the local landscape.
The surrounding area contains evidence of Neolithic settlements, with numerous prehistoric remains discovered in caves along the left bank of Verdon.
The lake is freely accessible with parking areas near the shores for visitors. Spring and autumn offer the best conditions for fishing and hiking when weather is mild.
At the lake entrance sits a deep cave with warmer water that harbors populations of roach, perch, and pike fish. This natural feature creates a sheltered habitat for the species.
