Diborrato Waterfall, Natural waterfall in Colle di Val d'Elsa, Italy.

Diborrato Waterfall cascades down rocky terrain along the Elsa river and forms natural pools framed by limestone walls and vegetation. The surrounding landscape shows typical Tuscan features with steep slopes and dense growth along the watercourse.

The waterfall was part of a medieval water system dating to the 11th century that used the Steccaia structure to divert water to power local mills, paper factories, and ironworks. The system gradually faded, but left lasting marks on the landscape.

Local communities have celebrated the San Marziale festival on July 1st for centuries, incorporating the waterfall area into religious processions and traditional boat races along the Elsa river that unite regional villages.

The trail starts from San Marziale Bridge and follows marked pathways with informational signs along the way. Wooden railings and steps help at steep sections, and the path can be slippery after rain.

On hot days, the natural pools remain surprisingly cool and invite swimming. The steep limestone cliffs surrounding the water amplify the sound of cascading water into a thunderous echo.

Best natural swimming pools in Italy: wild bathing spots across the country

Italy offers many locations where one can swim in nature. From rock-carved basins to mountain lakes, hot springs, and secluded coves, the country is full of accessible water spots for those who enjoy swimming away from managed beaches. They can be found all over: in the Dolomite valleys, in the heart of Tuscany, on the coasts of Sardinia or Sicily. Some sites are accessible on foot after a short walk, others have been known to locals for a long time. The water can be icy or warm depending on the region, but it is always surrounded by scenic landscapes. These natural pools are often quiet places where people come to relax, have picnics, or simply enjoy the scenery. They reveal another aspect of Italy, one that is more straightforward and closer to nature.
