Gacka springs

Gacka Springs emerge from underground limestone formations and form a 61-kilometer river with consistently clear water throughout its course. The river maintains a steady temperature year-round and powers several reconstructed mills along its path.

The area became a milling center over several centuries, with dozens of water-powered mills operating along the river. These mills served farmers across the region who brought their grain for grinding.

The springs are woven into rural Croatian life, where old mills once served as gathering spots for farmers and their families. These structures still shape how locals and visitors experience the landscape today.

The mills can be visited by arrangement and offer insight into how water-powered grinding once worked. Local restaurants serve fresh fish caught from these waters, a specialty of the area.

Brown trout in these waters grow significantly faster than in other rivers, a result of the water's unique mineral composition. Fish here reach sizes that are uncommon in most other locations.
