Grabovača, Show cave complex in Perušić, Croatia
Grabovača is a cave system near Perušić comprising eight caves and one pit spread across a substantial area. The complex features extensive calcite formations and sits at an elevation of 770 meters above sea level.
The development of Samograd Cave started in 1886 when a committee was established for exploration and research. By 1903, trails and stairs had been built to make the cave accessible to visitors.
Samograd Cave contains human remains and pottery from the 12th to 1st century BC left by ancient inhabitants. Visitors can also spot signatures carved by Austrian officers from 1835, marking an era when travelers began exploring the caves.
Warm clothing is important because the cave temperature ranges between 7 and 10 degrees Celsius (45-50 degrees Fahrenheit). Good footwear helps you navigate the concrete steps and stone paths safely.
Four halls within the cave system are named after historical figures: Fras, Perušić, Karlović, and Kukuljević. These names honor pioneers who contributed to exploring and opening the caves to visitors.
