Terme San Filippo, Public thermal baths in Castiglione d'Orcia, Italy.

Terme San Filippo features natural sulfurous thermal waters at 48°C that spring directly from the mountain, creating natural pools with therapeutic properties recognized since Roman times for health and wellness treatments.

The thermal site was already utilized by Romans for its healing properties, and in the 13th century, San Filippo Benzi sought refuge here during the papal conclave of 1269.

The thermal waters rich in sulfur, calcium, and magnesium are traditionally used to treat inflammatory conditions, muscle tension, and improve blood circulation according to centuries-old healing practices.

The thermal facility operates Monday 9am-6pm, Wednesday-Thursday 10am-6pm, and Friday-Sunday 9am-7pm, offering treatments covered by the National Health Service for various medical conditions.

The limestone formation called 'Balena Bianca' resembles a giant white whale created by centuries of mineral deposits from thermal waters, representing a remarkable geological phenomenon in the natural landscape.

Best natural swimming pools in Italy: wild bathing spots across the country

Italy offers many locations where one can swim in nature. From rock-carved basins to mountain lakes, hot springs, and secluded coves, the country is full of accessible water spots for those who enjoy swimming away from managed beaches. They can be found all over: in the Dolomite valleys, in the heart of Tuscany, on the coasts of Sardinia or Sicily. Some sites are accessible on foot after a short walk, others have been known to locals for a long time. The water can be icy or warm depending on the region, but it is always surrounded by scenic landscapes. These natural pools are often quiet places where people come to relax, have picnics, or simply enjoy the scenery. They reveal another aspect of Italy, one that is more straightforward and closer to nature.
