Océan, Lead sculpture in Versailles, France
Océan is a lead sculpture group by Jean-Baptiste Lemoyne, located in the gardens of Versailles. It depicts a bearded male figure reclining on sea creatures and waves, rising from a stone basin.
Created by Jean-Baptiste Lemoyne between 1737 and 1740, it was installed at the Neptune Basin in the early 1740s. The sculpture was restored in the late 19th century and again in the 20th century.
The figure represents Oceanus, a Titan in Greek mythology, and is part of a group of sculptures at the Neptune Basin. Visitors often notice the detailed sea creatures and waves at its base, which add to the marine theme.
The sculpture is best viewed from the paths around the Neptune Basin, where you can walk freely and take your time. It is located outdoors, so plan your visit on a day with good weather to fully enjoy the surroundings.
The sculpture was cast using over 63,000 pounds of lead, and it was originally bronzed to give it a darker appearance. The bronzing was done by Jacques Bailly in 1743.
