Statue of Evert Taube, Gamla stan, Statue in Gamla Stan, Stockholm, Sweden
The Statue of Evert Taube, Gamla stan is a bronze sculpture at the eastern end of Järntorget square in Stockholm's old town. It shows the poet and composer standing next to a building, wearing sunglasses and holding his last piece of music in his hand.
The sculpture was created by Karl Göte Bejemark and put in place on June 18, 1985. It was a gift to the city of Stockholm from the furniture company IKEA, given on the company's twentieth anniversary.
Visitors often pause here while walking through the narrow lanes of the old town, taking photos with the figure that seems to squint into the sun. The nearby restaurant Den Gyldene Freden, where Taube often sat, still draws people who want to sit where he once spent time.
The statue stands directly on the pavement, so you can walk right up to it without any barrier. The surrounding square and nearby old streets have uneven cobblestones, so wear comfortable shoes when you explore the area.
Unlike most bronze monuments, this figure is painted in natural-looking colors, which makes the metal feel more like a real person at first glance. The statue was placed directly on the sidewalk rather than on a pedestal, so many passersby nearly brush against it without realizing it is art.
