Les Gorges de la Jordanne, Hiking trail through gorges in Saint-Cirgues-de-Jordanne, France.
The gorges extend over 4 kilometers with depths ranging from 20 to 60 meters, carved by the Jordanne river through volcanic rocks called breccia, featuring wooden bridges and observation structures along the scenic trail.
Formed by millennia of water erosion on volcanic rock, the gorges were systematically explored from the 19th century by naturalists studying the complex geology and unique biodiversity of this Cantal region location.
The site represents the deep relationship between local populations and their natural territory, often celebrated during regional festivals where ancient legends about rocks and turbulent waters feed the oral literature of the area.
Access is via a departmental road with parking between Lascelles and Saint-Cirgues-de-Jordanne, open from 10 AM to 8 PM in summer with 2.50 euro entrance fee, leashed dogs are permitted on the trail.
The trail crosses a chaos of rocky blocks deposited by an ancient glacier where baby carriers are provided free of charge since the path is not accessible to strollers, ensuring safety for families with young children.
