Riad Lyon-Mogador, Traditional riad hotel in Essaouira medina, Morocco.
This 18th-century riad contains eleven rooms distributed across three floors surrounding a central courtyard. The spaces feature natural materials and simple lines reflecting Moroccan craftsmanship, with handmade details and neutral color schemes throughout.
The building began as a private residence before being converted for guest accommodation. It retains the traditional Moroccan riad architecture and design character of its original period.
The riad collaborates with local artisans whose work decorates the rooms and common spaces throughout the building. Guests experience Moroccan hospitality through traditional meals prepared daily with fresh ingredients sourced from the medina market.
The riad sits within the medina, accessible only through narrow alleyways, so planning your route in advance is helpful. The rooftop requires climbing multiple flights of stairs, so guests should consider their fitness level when planning visits there.
The rooftop terrace, accessed via multiple staircases, offers views in all directions over the medina's roofs and out to the Atlantic Ocean. Meals taken here let guests watch the sun set above both the town and the coastline.
