Dosan Seowan, Confucian academy in Andong, South Korea

Dosan Seowon is a historic Confucian academy in Andong, South Korea, recognized as an archaeological site. The complex includes a study hall called Dosan Seodang, student dormitories, a library known as Gwangmyeongsil, and a shrine, all arranged across a riverside setting.

Yi Hwang founded a small school on this site in 1561 and personally oversaw its construction until his death in 1570. After he died, his students built a full academy around it, and King Seonjo granted the site its official name in 1575, sending a plaque written by a celebrated calligrapher of the time.

Dosan Seowon is closely tied to Yi Hwang, known in Korea as Toegye, whose face appears on the 1,000-won banknote. Visitors today can still witness small ceremonies held in his honor, and the plain wooden buildings reflect his belief in a modest way of life.

Spring and autumn are the most rewarding times to visit, when the riverside trees change color or bloom. The grounds cover a wide area with multiple paths, so wear comfortable shoes and plan for a slow walk of at least an hour.

Dosan Seodang, the oldest building on the site, was built by Yi Hwang himself and is deliberately small and plain. He wanted it that way to show that serious study does not need comfort or decoration, a message visitors still sense when stepping inside the narrow room.
