ROKS Seoul, War memorial frigate in 망원1동, Seoul, South Korea
ROKS Seoul is a steel Ulsan-class frigate preserved as a war memorial in the 망원1동 district of Seoul. The vessel stretches about 104 meters and was built to carry missiles, guns, torpedoes, and a flight deck for utility helicopters.
The frigate was built by Hyundai Heavy Industries in Ulsan and launched in 1984, making it one of the first large warships built entirely in South Korea. After over thirty years of service, including participation in the 2014 MV Sewol search operation, it was decommissioned in 2015.
The ship is moored at Seoul Battleship Park along the Han River and pairs well with a walk along the riverbank. Some interior spaces are open to visitors, though the tight passageways on board can be difficult for people with limited mobility.
Although the ship bears the name of the capital, it was built in Ulsan and based in Busan, far from Seoul itself. It only arrived in the city whose name it carries after being decommissioned.
