Trg republike, Pedestrian square in central Ljubljana, Slovenia
Trg republike is the largest square in Ljubljana, spanning roughly 985 feet (300 meters) across, and features modernist architecture including government buildings, high-rise towers, and the national cultural center Cankarjev dom.
Architect Edvard Ravnikar won the design contest in 1960 and developed the square over nearly two decades, transforming a former convent garden and parking area into a modernist civic space completed in 1974.
The square serves as Slovenia's political and cultural center, hosting the Slovenian parliament and the Monument of the Revolution by sculptor Drago Tršar, unveiled in 1975 to commemorate the country's socialist heritage.
Visitors can reach Trg republike by several city bus lines or on foot from central hotels, and guided tours of the parliament building are offered on the second Saturday of each month.
On June 27, 1991, during Slovenia's independence struggle, a Yugoslav military helicopter carrying bread was shot down from the TR3 tower on the square, resulting in two fatalities and marking a tragic wartime moment.
