Museo Abtao del Callao
The Museo Abtao del Callao is a museum inside a former Peruvian Navy submarine in Callao, Peru. The vessel is divided into six sections: torpedo room, forward battery, control center, aft battery, engine room, and motor room.
The submarine was built in the United States and entered service with the Peruvian Navy in 1954. After nearly five decades at sea, it was opened as a museum in 2004.
The submarine retains its original equipment and narrow passageways, giving a real sense of how sailors worked and rested during long missions at sea. Visitors often pause at the control panels and torpedo tubes, imagining the decisions made in tight quarters beneath the waves.
Entry is through a hatch about 63 centimeters wide, reached by climbing a ladder. The passages are narrow, so comfortable shoes and clothing are recommended.
Some areas inside still show markings and inscriptions left by crew members who worked there over decades. These small traces remind visitors of the many men who served in these tight spaces.
