BAP Abtao, Museum submarine in Lima, Peru

The BAP Abtao is a museum submarine in Lima that stretches 80 meters long and features six torpedo tubes plus a deck gun for naval operations. Inside, you can walk through the control room, torpedo sections, and living quarters.

Built in 1953 by the Electric Boat Company, this vessel served in the Peruvian Navy until 1999 before becoming a museum in 2004. Its transformation showed the nation's interest in preserving its naval past.

The name comes from a key battle during the Chincha Islands War and reflects Peru's naval heritage. Walking through the tight spaces inside gives you a sense of how this vessel mattered to the nation's maritime story.

The submarine sits in the central Callao district and welcomes visitors to explore its tight corridors and chambers. Expect confined spaces, and wear solid shoes to safely navigate the metal grating and stairs.

The vessel took part in rescuing the crew of the BAP Pacocha submarine after it collided with a fishing boat in 1988. This dramatic episode shows how the ship played a real role beyond routine navy duties.

This ship that sailed under polar ice opens its doors

Hallways made of metal so narrow that you walk sideways, beds stacked in groups of three where sleeping seemed impossible, and control rooms where men made decisions in complete silence: enter these open-to-the-public submarines and see what life beneath the sea is like.
