Berner Sternenmarkt
The Berner Sternenmarkt is a seasonal Christmas market on the Europapromenade in central Bern, featuring over 65 small wooden chalets decorated with lights and offering food, drinks, handcrafted items, and gifts. The market includes a large fondue chalet seating 200 guests and more than 20 food vendors serving international cuisines, plus a children's area with a carousel.
The Berner Sternenmarkt was established in 2018, introducing a new take on Christmas celebrations in Bern alongside the city's two older traditional markets. Founders Tom Weingart and renowned chef Markus Arnold created it as a gathering place for the winter season.
The market takes its name from the sparkling lights that glow like stars across the park, creating a sense of winter magic. This focus on light and the cozy wooden chalets reflects how locals value handcrafted traditions and gathering together during the holiday season.
The market is easily accessible by public transportation, on foot, and by city bus, and operates in a park in the city center making it stress-free to visit. All transactions are cashless using cards or the Twint mobile payment app, so bring a payment card instead of cash.
A standout feature is the Gstaader Fondue-Chalet, which serves authentic Swiss cheese fondue in a cozy setting for up to 200 guests seated indoors. Many visitors make this fondue hut their favorite stop, finding it captures genuine Swiss winter traditions in one memorable spot.

Every year, when the advent arrives, Christmas markets change the squares and old streets of European towns. Wooden stalls are set up and offer local flavors, crafts, and seasonal decorations. Walking from one stand to another, you can taste hot mulled wine, roasted almonds, and see the handmade goods that each region is proud of. In Germany, markets are found in Nuremberg, Dresden, Munich, Hamburg, and Stuttgart. Austria has markets in Vienna and Salzburg. France gathers its markets in Strasbourg, Metz, Montbéliard, and Lille. Brussels, Bruges, and Louvain welcome visitors in Belgium, Maastricht and Valkenburg in the Netherlands, and Wrocław, Krakow, and Poznań in Poland. These places tell stories about their local history and food traditions. From Prague to Budapest, passing through Zagreb, Basel, and Bern, markets are also found in Central and Eastern Europe. Scandinavian cities like Stockholm, Gothenburg, Oslo, and Rovaniemi, along with Riga and Tallinn in the Baltic states, keep this tradition alive. London, Edinburgh, Merano, Asti-Govone, and Madeira finish this winter trip across the continent, each showing how Christmas is celebrated in their ways.
