Crater Lake

Crater Lake is a large, exceptionally deep lake nestled inside an ancient volcanic crater, surrounded by steep rocky cliffs that plunge directly into the water. The water is remarkably clear and shines in an intense blue that shifts with light and weather conditions.

The lake formed roughly 7700 years ago when a volcano erupted and then collapsed inward, creating a bowl-shaped depression. Rain and snow gradually filled this natural basin over time, creating the lake visible today.

The lake held deep meaning for Native American tribes long before modern times, featured in their traditional stories and beliefs. Visitors today can sense how this place remains spiritually significant to many people.

The water is fed only by rain and snowmelt, making it exceptionally pure and clear. Visitors should be prepared for quick weather changes and bring warm clothing plus sun protection for outdoor activities.

The lake is among the deepest in the nation and supports a unique population of kokanee salmon and rainbow trout found nowhere else in this form. The water clarity is so exceptional that scientists study it to understand natural water processes and climate patterns.
