Balade Littorale Campu Rumanilu
Balade Littorale Campu Rumanilu is a coastal trail near Bonifacio that starts at the Saint-Roch chapel and winds along rocky cliffs. The path runs about 100 feet (30 meters) above the sea and provides views of the water, the old town perched on the cliff edge, and on clear days, the outline of Sardinia across the water.
The trail passes by the remains of an old slaughterhouse, a remnant of early settlement in the area. This structure and traces of past human activity, such as stone walls and small farm remains, tell of generations who lived along this coast and made their living from the land and sea.
The name Campu Rumanilu means "rosemary fields" and refers to the aromatic plants that grow throughout the coastal area. These wild herbs shape the landscape and attract birds that visitors can watch while walking.
Wear comfortable hiking shoes and bring plenty of water, as the coastal sun is strong and there are no shops or cafes along the route. Pack a picnic or snacks before setting out, and consider visiting in early morning or late afternoon when temperatures are cooler and the light is softer.
On clear days, the trail offers a view of Sardinia visible across the water, creating an unexpected international perspective from a French coastal walk. This distant outlook transforms the hike into a broader Mediterranean experience that many visitors do not anticipate when starting out.
