Tevfikiye Mosque, mosque in İstanbul, Turkey
Tevfikiye Mosque is a house of prayer in Arnavutköy, a neighborhood within Beşiktaş on the European side of Istanbul. The building features a spacious prayer hall of about 287 square meters, a courtyard, a single minaret, a sultan's gallery for dignitaries, and 29 windows that allow sunlight to flood the interior space.
The mosque was commissioned by Sultan Mahmud II, the 30th Ottoman ruler, as a gift for his son and constructed between approximately 1832 and 1838. Its stone masonry construction reflects the building techniques and architectural style of the 19th century Ottoman period.
The mosque bears the name of its founder and serves as a familiar gathering place in daily life. Residents and visitors experience it not only as a house of prayer but also as a space where neighbors meet and share a sense of belonging to the local community.
Visit early in the morning or after prayer times when the mosque is most accessible to visitors. Dress modestly and remove your shoes before entering the prayer hall, as is customary in houses of worship.
Carved inscriptions throughout the interior display the signature style of Sultan Mahmud II, serving as a personal mark from the founder. These calligraphic details are visible to attentive visitors and connect the building's everyday use to its royal origins.
