Santuario della SS. Trinità
The Santuario della SS. Trinità is a small church perched on a rocky outcrop of Monte Orlando in Gaeta, built with simple stone walls and modest architectural details. Inside, it holds sacred artworks spanning different periods, while the surroundings feature steep cliffs, vegetation, and views toward the sea.
The sanctuary was founded in the 11th century by Benedictine monks and is said to stand on the remains of a Roman villa. Over the centuries, various religious orders used the site, which received baroque features during renovations at the end of the 1600s.
The name Trinità refers to the Holy Trinity, which forms the spiritual core of this worship space. Locals and visitors gather here to pray and pass down stories about miraculous events, making it a place where faith and community memory remain deeply woven into daily life.
The sanctuary is reachable by car with parking available nearby, located about 2 kilometers from Gaeta's center. Visit in the morning or early afternoon as opening hours vary by season, and entry to the grounds is free of charge.
A local legend tells of a disbeliever whose hand softened when he touched a rock at the sanctuary, creating what is known as the "Mano del Turco" or "Hand of the Turk." This mysterious imprint on the stone continues to draw visitors curious about the mystical story behind it.
