Plaza Mayor
Plaza Mayor is a large rectangular square in central Trujillo featuring Renaissance buildings from the 15th and 16th centuries with arcaded walkways. An equestrian bronze statue of Francisco Pizarro stands at its center, surrounded by noble palaces displaying carved stone decorations, balconies, and family crests.
The square evolved from a medieval marketplace with artisans into a center of wealth and political power during the Renaissance period. In the 16th century, wealthy families built grand palaces around it, reflecting their involvement in expeditions to the Americas.
The square serves as the main gathering space for locals and visitors, where daily life and celebrations take place. Here people meet, eat at outdoor cafes, and participate in seasonal festivals that keep traditions alive.
The square is open and accessible at all times, making it easy to explore at your own pace. Cafes, restaurants, and shops surround the area, offering places to rest and enjoy local products while taking in the views.
The square was used as a filming location for the television series Game of Thrones, serving as a convincing medieval backdrop for the show. This international exposure revealed how well the historic setting adapts to modern productions and brought global attention to the town.
