Centro Histórico de Pontevedra
Centro Histórico de Pontevedra is the old city center of a small city in Galicia with cobbled streets, stone houses, and quiet squares. Most of its streets are pedestrian-only and feature medieval buildings, baroque palaces, and several churches including the Basilica of Santa María la Mayor and the unusually shaped Church of the Pilgrim.
The historic center was declared Cultural Heritage in 1951 and preserves many buildings from the medieval period. Its development was closely linked to pilgrimage traffic on the Portuguese Way of Saint James, which shaped its religious and cultural importance over centuries.
The square called Praza da Peregrina takes its name from the Church of the Virgin of the Pilgrim, which sits on the Portuguese way of Saint James. Today the square remains a gathering place where locals and visitors spend time at outdoor cafes and restaurants.
Most streets in the center are walkable and relatively flat, making exploration easy. Small cafes and restaurants are scattered throughout, especially around the Ferrería and Praza da Peregrina squares, where you can eat and drink.
The Church of the Pilgrim has an unusual shell-shaped floor plan that catches visitors' eyes immediately and sets it apart from typical church layouts. This one-of-a-kind shape makes it a recognizable landmark throughout the neighborhood.
