Old town of Pontevedra
Old town of Pontevedra, Historic district in Pontevedra, Spain
The old town of Pontevedra is a historic district featuring arcaded streets that connect squares named after their original functions such as A Ferrería and A Leña. The layout follows a pattern of parallel streets and walkways lined with buildings that blend different architectural periods from medieval times onward.
The settlement received its charter in 1169 from King Ferdinand II of León, which led to the construction of fortified walls and three parallel streets as the urban framework. This official status transformed it into a trading center that would develop into an important maritime town over subsequent centuries.
The Basilica of Santa María A Maior displays an ornate Plateresque facade and reflects the importance of fishing families in shaping the town. Walking through the surrounding plaza, you can feel how this building anchors the daily life and identity of the community.
The best time to explore is early morning or late afternoon when crowds are lighter and the streets feel more tranquil. The cobblestone pavement in narrow alleys can be slippery when wet, so wear sturdy shoes and watch your footing carefully.
The Sanctuary of A Peregrina features a floor plan shaped like a scallop shell, a symbol associated with pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. Many travelers on this spiritual journey pause here to experience this unusual architectural form that honors the pilgrim tradition.
