Mansion of the Marquis of Riestra
Mansion of the Marquis of Riestra, Private mansion on Michelena Street, Pontevedra, Spain
The Mansion of the Marquis of Riestra is a three-story residential building on Michelena Street featuring a rose-orange brick facade with continuous decorative bands running across all sides. The structure displays eclectic architectural elements including English-style balustrades and detailed exterior ornamentation throughout its composition.
The building was constructed in 1900 for José Riestra López, a wealthy banker, serving initially as both his residence and the headquarters of his banking business. Later, the structure was repurposed to function as municipal administrative offices for the city.
The mansion reflects the architectural tastes of wealthy Spanish banking families from the early 1900s, blending different design styles in its exterior details. Passersby can still observe these choices in the building's brick surface and decorative elements today.
The building sits in a central location on Michelena Street, making it easy to find and view from the street as you walk through the city. Since it now serves administrative purposes, visitors can appreciate the exterior architecture without needing interior access.
Wooden galleries were added to the top floor in 1925 to provide space for the Marquis' four sons and their expanding families. This expansion reveals how the house adapted to the changing needs of its residents over time.
