Pontevedra City Hall, City Hall in Plaza de España, Pontevedra, Spain.
Pontevedra City Hall is the municipal government building of Pontevedra, in Galicia, Spain, located on Plaza de España at the heart of the old town. The facade mixes classical and baroque elements in an eclectic style, with Ionic columns on the ground floor, Corinthian columns above, and an Empire-style staircase inside.
The current building was constructed between 1877 and 1880, replacing an older town hall that dated back to 1595. It was built during a period of economic growth in the city, which led to a broader redesign of the central plaza around it.
The facade carries a 16th-century inscription dedicated to Teucer, the mythical founder of Pontevedra, which was preserved from the previous building. Visitors can read it directly on the stone, making it one of the most tangible connections to the city's legendary origins.
The building stands directly on the main square and is easy to reach on foot from anywhere in the old town. Since it is an active administrative building, only some areas are open to the public, so it is worth checking in advance what can be visited.
In 1993, the building was awarded the Grand Cross of Naval Merit with white badge, a decoration that is normally given to people, not to buildings. This honor reflects Pontevedra's long maritime past, as the city was once one of the main fishing centers of Galicia.
