Mondego Green Park

Mondego Green Park is a large green space covering about 400,000 square meters (roughly 4 acres) that stretches along the Mondego River in Coimbra. The park features about 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) of walking and biking paths, open meadows, playground areas, a wooden platform café overlooking the river, and several pavilions used by rowing, sailing, and canoeing clubs.

The park was built along a river that has shaped Coimbra since its founding and determined the city's growth over centuries. The Mondego's waters have periodically flooded important city areas, creating a deep connection between the community and the river's force and influence.

The park is named after the Mondego River, which has inspired local stories and poems for centuries and remains central to the region's way of life. You can see how locals use the riverside paths to walk, fish, and enjoy quiet afternoons, connecting them to traditions shaped by the river's presence.

The park is easy to explore on foot or by bike since the paths are well-maintained and clearly marked throughout. Visitors can plan their own route at a comfortable pace and use the riverside café or picnic areas for breaks, especially on warm days when outdoor activities are most enjoyable.

The park preserves the tradition of the Barca serrana, old boats once used by washerwomen to carry laundry along the river. Visitors can still rent and ride these historic boats today, offering a direct connection to how people lived on the river generations ago.
