Via Ferrata de la Roche du Mont, climbing route in Ornans, France
Roche du Mont is a climbing route built into the rock face overlooking Ornans in the Doubs region. The path stretches roughly 360 meters across the cliff mostly horizontally, using ladders, bridges, and metal bars for grips and footholds.
The climbing route was established in the early 2000s and expanded in 2005 to add a more demanding section. The cliff itself served as a strategic lookout point before becoming developed for recreational climbing.
The name Roche du Mont refers to the rock face towering above Ornans, shaping how people see their surroundings. From the climbing route, visitors look down at the village and understand how deeply the cliff is connected to local life.
Parking is located near the starting point, with a short walk down to the cliff face. Wear sturdy shoes, a helmet, and a safety harness; the rock becomes slippery when wet, so visit during dry conditions.
The 2005 ED+ extension features extremely steep overhanging sections with no escape route, requiring only experienced climbers. This demanding part is known among serious athletes and offers a completely different challenge from the main route.
